Professor Steven Reiss created the 38-item Reiss Screen in 1987 and the 60-item Reiss Scales in 1988. Data obtained from these instruments have been used to justify the creation of many service programs in North America, the UK, and elsewhere. Professor Reiss has been recognized with the following awards for his work with people with intellectual disabilities:

- Frank J. Menolascino Award for Career Research, National Association on Dual Diagnosis
- Distinguished Award for Career Research, Arc of the United States
- Distinguished Services Award, American Association on Mental Retardation
